Between the rivers of Besos and Llobregat, lying against the green ridges of San Pedro Martir, Tibidabo and Collserola, the capital of Catalan, cultural, economic and industrial metropolis, facing the banks of the Mare Nostrum, the Mediterranean Sea of the Romans, who developed there a cartel, under the reign of Augustus Caesar. Yet, legend has it that the cartel itself was first founded by the Phoenician Hamilcar Barca.

Today’s Barcelona can be divided into three different parts : the Old City, around the haven, whose axis is built up by the Ramblas; the modern Ensanche, with its streets drawn as limits to the regular blocks of buildings; and the Grand Barcelona, including the ancient villages of Sans, Sarria, Gracia, San Martin de Provensals or Horta. At the north of the Ramblas, Plaça Catalunya marks the heart of the city.
