The Raval is divided from the Gothic Quarter through the lines of Les Rambles. It was once a quartier of laborers, before it turned into a melting pot where immigrants newly arrived in Barcelona came to settle down, around the beginning of the 20th century. Then it acquired the nickname of “Barrio Chino” or Chinese Quarter, not because of the significant presence of the Asian community, but to mark its cosmopolitan and multiethnical aspects. Between 1920 and 1930, Raval with its suspicious bars became the meeting point and establishment of many artists, painters and writers.
