Photo Precedente Santa Maria del Mar - The Facade Photo Suivante
Rich shipowners and merchants who lived in La Ribera since the Middle Age, marking the quarter as Barcelona’s commercial center between the 13th and the 15th century, felt that it would have been an absolute need to build a church in order to honor their successes. The Church of Santa Maria del Mar was built between 1329 and 1383, and it is said that every inhabitant of La Ribera had participated in its construction, and that was indeed the reason why, unlike most other churches in the Middle Age, the Church of Santa Maria del Mar was finished rapidly (the construction only took about 50 years).
