At the place where the Parc de la Ciutadella now lies, there used to be a military fortress (Citadel, thus the name) built under the reign of Philip V at the beginning of the 18th century, for the purposes of punishments as well as to control situation in Barcelona following the War of the Spanish Succession. The construction of this huge star-shaped fortress had costed much to a part of the ancient quarter of La Ribera, whose habitants had been expulsed from their homes to provide the space for the fortress.
