A very vast residential district of Barcelona, the Eixample was constructed around 1860, during the period where the wall surrounding the old city was demolished. The urbanist Ildefons Cerda created this new city, as an extension to the old Barcelona, as a modern and rationalized part, with streets lining up straightly one another, somehow resembling New York City’s Manhattan. Every building block, called “manzanas” (in English meaning “apples”), has the exact length of 113 meters. The corners are cut in exact angles of 45 degrees.Very vast quarter, the Eixample is subdivided in Dreta de l’Eixample and Esquerra de l’Eixample (in which Barri de Sant Antoni, bordering Montjuic, is located). The most luxurious avenue in Eixample is undoubtedly the Paseo de Gracia, Barcelona’s very own Champs-Élysées. Indeed, it had been on this very avenue, and within the neighboring blocks, that Modernist-styled constructions had been built, towards the end of the 19th century, masterpieces by Antoni Gaudi, Lluis Domenech i Montaner or also from Puig i Cadafalch, which helped remaking the face of Barcelona we know today, the Barcelona reputated for its Avant-Garde style, so unique in Europe.
