first Christopher Columbus Photo Suivante
At the end of Las Ramblas, on the Plaza Portal de la Pau rises the Monument a Colom, made by Rafael Atche in 1888, overlooking the Old Haven of Barcelona from its 47 m of altitude. An interior stairway leads up to the top of the bronze column, to an observation platform. If Barcelona hadn’t been the native land of the great sailor, it had been indeed here in the Old Haven that Columbus arrived back to Spain after his first journey, where he was received by Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. An interesting trivia : the statue points its finger towards the east, at the opposite direction of the New World.
